We say "blessed to be a blessing"...A LOT! It isn't just a catchy phrase or a cute hashtag to us. It is our heartbeat at Finishing Touch. It means we get to give good gifts like Jesus does - freely and lavishly - in His name. We are rewarded in knowing that we have made a difference in the lives of people, like K, who are desperate for a little hope.
K had two young children and was 29 weeks pregnant when we first spoke to her at a women's shelter. Several days later we learned that she was in the hospital and had delivered her baby prematurely. Though tiny, her baby was a fighter. So while K spent as much time as she could going back and forth from her new, but empty, apartment to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, we began preparing to give them all the furnishings of HOME.
We partnered with Sleep in Heavenly Peace who provided bunk beds for the kids to sleep on. We created a nursery for the baby in the corner of K's bedroom. A donated baby monitor meant she would be able to watch him from whatever room she was in. K mentioned that she didn't know how she would take a newborn and her other two children along with her to the laundromat to wash clothes. We told her to pray about it, and God heard the desire of her heart. We don't usually take appliances, but someone had offered us a washer and dryer at JUST the right moment.
While having the ability to do laundry at home meant the world to mom, it was the little things that made all the difference to the kids. They were giddy with excitement about their new toothbrushes and nightlights. The blankets and towels that had their names on them left them in complete disbelief, saying over and over again," How'd they do that?"
